Heinz has revamped the ketchup packet

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The ketchup packet has been around for more than 40 years, and complaints about it for nearly as long: too messy, too small, too hard to open. Now H.J. Heinz Co. is unveiling the first major packaging change to the to-go condiment.

The new design has a base that’s more like a cup for dipping and also a tear-off end for squeezing. It holds three times as much ketchup.

The company recently made a solution a top priority. It even bought its design team a minivan to give their ideas real road tests. The new packet is in test markets and will roll out at some fast-food restaurants in the fall.

The 3 Facebook Privacy Settings Every User Should Check Now

By SARAH PEREZ of ReadWriteWeb

In December, Facebook made a series of bold and controversial changes regarding the nature of its users’ privacy on the social networking site. The company once known for protecting privacy to the point of exclusivity (it began its days as a network for college kids only – no one else even had access), now seemingly wants to compete with more open social networks like the microblogging media darling Twitter.

Those of you who edited your privacy settings prior to December’s change have nothing to worry about – that is, assuming you elected to keep your personalized settings when prompted by Facebook’s “transition tool.” The tool, a dialog box explaining the changes, appeared at the top of Facebook homepages this past month with its own selection of recommended settings. Unfortunately, most Facebook users likely opted for the recommended settings without really understanding what they were agreeing to. If you did so, you may now be surprised to find that you inadvertently gave Facebook the right to publicize your private information including status updates, photos, and shared links.

Want to change things back? Read on to find out how.

1. Who Can See The Things You Share (Status Updates, Photo, Videos, etc.)

Probably the most critical of the “privacy” changes (yes, we mean those quotes sarcastically) was the change made to status updates. Although there’s now a button beneath the status update field that lets you select who can view any particular update, the new Facebook default for this setting is “Everyone.” And by everyone, they mean everyone.

If you accepted the new recommended settings then you voluntarily gave Facebook the right to share the information about the items you post with any user or application on the site. Depending on your search settings, you may have also given Facebook the right to share that information with search engines, too.

To change this setting back to something of a more private nature, do the following:

  1. From your Profile page, hover your mouse over the Settings menu at the top right and click “Privacy Settings” from the list that appears.
  2. Click “Profile Information” from the list of choices on the next page.
  3. Scroll down to the setting “Posts by Me.” This encompasses anything you post, including status updates, links, notes, photos, and videos.
  4. Change this setting using the drop-down box on the right. We recommend the “Only Friends” setting to ensure that only those people you’ve specifically added as a friend on the network can see the things you post.

2. Who Can See Your Personal Info

Facebook has a section of your profile called “personal info,” but it only includes your interests, activities, and favorites. Other arguably more personal information is not encompassed by the “personal info” setting on Facebook’s Privacy Settings page. That other information includes things like your birthday, your religious and political views, and your relationship status.

After last month’s privacy changes, Facebook set the new defaults for this other information to viewable by either “Everyone” (for family and relationships, aka relationship status) or to “Friends of Friends” (birthday, religious and political views). Depending on your own preferences, you can update each of these fields as you see fit. However, we would bet that many will want to set these to “Only Friends” as well. To do so:

  1. From your Profile page, hover your mouse over the Settings menu at the top right and click “Privacy Settings” from the list that appears.
  2. Click “Profile Information” from the list of choices on the next page.
  3. The third, fourth, and fifth item listed on this page are as follows: “birthday,” “religious and political views,” and “family and relationship.” Locking down birthday to “Only Friends” is wise here, especially considering information such as this is often used in identity theft.
  4. Depending on your own personal preferences, you may or may not feel comfortable sharing your relationship status and religious and political views with complete strangers. And keep in mind, any setting besides “Only Friends” is just that – a stranger. While “Friends of Friends” sounds innocuous enough, it refers to everyone your friends have added as friends, a large group containing hundreds if not thousands of people you don’t know. All it takes is one less-than-selective friend in your network to give an unsavory person access to this information.

3. What Google Can See – Keep Your Data Off the Search Engines

When you visit Facebook’s Search Settings page, a warning message pops up. Apparently, Facebook wants to clear the air about what info is being indexed by Google. The message reads:

There have been misleading rumors recently about Facebook indexing all your information on Google. This is not true. Facebook created public search listings in 2007 to enable people to search for your name and see a link to your Facebook profile. They will still only see a basic set of information.

While that may be true to a point, the second setting listed on this Search Settings page refers to exactly what you’re allowing Google to index. If the box next to “Allow” is checked, you’re giving search engines the ability to access and index any information you’ve marked as visible by “Everyone.” As you can see from the settings discussed above, if you had not made some changes to certain fields, you would be sharing quite a bit with the search engines…probably more information than you were comfortable with. To keep your data private and out of the search engines, do the following:

  1. From your Profile page, hover your mouse over the Settings menu at the top right and click “Privacy Settings” from the list that appears.
  2. Click “Search” from the list of choices on the next page.
  3. Click “Close” on the pop-up message that appears.
  4. On this page, uncheck the box labeled “Allow” next to the second setting “Public Search Results.” That keeps all your publicly shared information (items set to viewable by “Everyone”) out of the search engines. If you want to see what the end result looks like, click the “see preview” link in blue underneath this setting.

Take 5 Minutes to Protect Your Privacy

While these three settings are, in our opinion, the most critical, they’re by no means the only privacy settings worth a look. In a previous article (written prior to December’s changes, so now out-of-date), we also looked at things like who can find you via Facebook’s own search, application security, and more.

While you may think these sorts of items aren’t worth your time now, the next time you lose out on a job because the HR manager viewed your questionable Facebook photos or saw something inappropriate a friend posted on your wall, you may have second thoughts. But why wait until something bad happens before you address the issue?

Considering that Facebook itself is no longer looking out for you, it’s time to be proactive about things and look out for yourself instead. Taking a few minutes to run through all the available privacy settings and educating yourself on what they mean could mean the world of difference to you at some later point…That is, unless you agree with Facebook in thinking that the world is becoming more open and therefore you should too.

Note: Other resources on Facebook’s latest changes worth reading include MakeUseOf’s 8 Steps Toward Regaining your Privacy, 17 steps to protect your privacy from Inside Facebook, the ACLU’s article examining the changes, and DotRights.org’s comprehensive analysis of the new settings. If you’re unhappy enough to protest Facebook’s privacy update, you can sign ACLU’s petition. The FTC is also looking into the matter thanks to a complaint filed by a coalition of privacy groups, led by the Electronic Privacy Information Center. You can add your voice to the list of complaints here.

President Obama is taking on the BCS

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is considering several steps that would review the legality of the controversial Bowl Championship Series, the Justice Department said in a letter Friday to a senator who had asked for an antitrust review.

In the letter to Sen. Orrin Hatch, obtained by The Associated Press, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich wrote that the Justice Department is reviewing Hatch’s request and other materials to determine whether to open an investigation into whether the BCS violates antitrust laws.

“Importantly, and in addition, the administration also is exploring other options that might be available to address concerns with the college football postseason,” Weich wrote, including asking the Federal Trade Commission to review the legality of the BCS under consumer protection laws.

Several lawmakers and many critics want the BCS to switch to a playoff system, rather than the ratings system it uses to determine the teams that play in the championship game.

“The administration shares your belief that the current lack of a college football national championship playoff with respect to the highest division of college football … raises important questions affecting millions of fans, colleges and universities, players and other interested parties,” Weich wrote.

Weich made note of the fact that President Barack Obama, before he was sworn in, had stated his preference for a playoff system. In 2008, Obama said he was going to “to throw my weight around a little bit” to nudge college football toward a playoff system, a point that Hatch stressed when he urged Obama last fall to ask the department to investigate the BCS.

Weich said that other options include encouraging the NCAA to take control of the college football postseason; asking a governmental or non-governmental commission to review the costs, benefits and feasibility of a playoff system; and legislative efforts aimed at prompting a switch to a playoff system.

Weich noted that several undefeated teams have not had a chance to play for the national championship, including TCU and Boise State this year and Utah last year.

“This seemingly discriminatory action with regard to revenues and access have raised questions regarding whether the BCS potentially runs afoul of the nation’s antitrust laws,” he wrote.

Hatch, a Utah Republican, was steamed that his home state team was deprived of getting a chance to play for the title last year.

“I’m encouraged by the administration’s response,” he said in a statement. “I continue to believe there are antitrust issues the administration should explore, but I’m heartened by its willingness to consider alternative approaches to confront the tremendous inequities in the BCS that favor one set of schools over others. The current system runs counter to basic fairness that every family tries to instill in their children from the day they are born.”

Under the BCS, the champions of six conference have automatic bids to play in top-tier bowl games, while the other conferences don’t. Those six conferences also receive more money than the other conferences, although the BCS announced this week that the ones that don’t have automatic bids will receive a record $24 million from this year’s bowl games.

Bill Hancock, executive director of the BCS, said that officials there would need more time to review the letter before commenting on it. He did say, “We’re confident that the BCS structure complies with the laws of the country.”

“The consensus of the schools is to go with the BCS,” Hancock added. “We feel strongly the people in higher education are the people best equipped to manage college football.”

Article: Scott Roeder found guilty of aborting George Tiller

My friend (and one of the most innovative and Biblical voices in the pro-life movement), Bryan Kemper, wrote a blog post about the conviction of Scott Roeder and this story from beginning to now:

*****

It only took 37 minutes for the jury to convict Scott Roeder of aborting George Tiller.  I am surprised it took that long.  I was also kind of in shock (but shouldn’t have been considering some of his recent antics) to see our old pal Randall Terry making a mockery of pro-lifers outside the courthouse.  I have often written about the difference between Loving Compassionate Pro-life and Angry anti-abortion and Randall Terry is the perfect example of that.

You may wonder about me using the title “aborting George Tiller”, here is the piece I wrote the day after the shooting it might help explain it much better.

An Abortionist Was Aborted Yesterday – Stand True’s Response

Yesterday morning, abortionist George Tiller was aborted as he walked into his church. Someone decided to take the law into their own hands and abort him for what he has done to thousands of innocent little baby boys and girls.

Stand True does not believe in aborting abortionists and denounces this violent act. Answering the violence of abortion with more violence will not serve the babies or help the pro-life movement in any way. We are praying for the family of George Tiller and those in his church while he was shot. We know that healing can come through Jesus and pray those involved in the abortion industry will turn to Christ.

I am sure some of you are trying to figure out why I would be so insensitive as to use the term “aborted” when referring to the murder of George Tiller. I wonder of those who think I am being insensitive are also people who would be mad when I use the term “murdered” when talking about babies who are aborted? In all reality I am being very sensitive to the abortion industry by saying he was aborted, since that is the term they like to use to describe the taking of a life.

While this may sound very sarcastic, I am truly saddened by yesterday’s events. However I am also saddened that yesterday, 4,000 babies were also murdered. I am saddened that today, 4,000 babies will be murdered. I am saddened that tomorrow, 4,000 babies will be murdered.

I am saddened that the news media will not be reporting on the horrific fate of those 4,000 innocent babies who are just as human as and deserving of the same protection as George Tiller.

I am saddened that the police who so diligently searched for and apprehended the man who aborted George Tiller; are the same police who protect the men and women who abort little baby boys and girls.

I listened to commentators talking on the news about how we need to “tone down” our rhetoric to avoid violence. What they refuse to see is that our rhetoric is crying out against violence, the violence of child killing. We are the ones who are trying to bring an end to violence and 4,000 murders a day.

I have seen what happens is the past when an abortionist is aborted, the pro-life movement seems to shy away from action. I have seen people drop out of the movement and back away from getting involved.

If anything, we need to step up our fight against violence and the killing of human persons. What yesterday showed us is that hearts have been hardened to life and we must shine the light of Christ and Hope into this dark world even brighter then ever.

I urge all of you who believe in the sanctity of human life to stay focused. Do not let this despicable act of cowardice sway you from standing up and being a voice for the babies. I know things will be tough, as people will judge us just for being associated with pro- life. We must reiterate that the abortion of George Tiller was not a pro-life act, just as the murder of 4,000 children a day are not pro- life acts.

As for using the term “aborted” when referring to the death of George Tiller. I will stop using that term when the pro-abortion industry starts calling abortion “homicide”, which is what it is. I am simply using their own term to describe the taking of a human life; they should have no problem with it.

For Christ I Stand,
Bryan Kemper – bryankemper@standtrue.com

Vic Firth introduces Andrew Markworth Series
January 29, 2010

Boston, MA. November 2009 – Vic Firth Inc., the world’s largest and leading manufacturer of drumsticks and mallets, is proud to introduce the Andrew Markworth Corpsmaster® Signature Keyboard Mallets.

As an instructor, arranger, composer and show designer, Andrew Markworth burst onto the marching percussion scene at a very young age! His talents have been showcased with some of the very best ensembles within the DCI, WGI and BOA arenas. Most recently, his design and instruction helped propel the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps to a silver medal finish at the 2009 DCI World Championships.

“My goal with this mallet series was to create maximum sound projection while maintaining a dark tone quality,” states Markworth. “We now have a series that creates a big, natural sound from the front ensemble that will carry all the way to the press box. Anyone looking to improve the maturity of sound and presence of their mallet section will surely do so with these new mallets!”

The new Markworth Signature Series features 6 models — 3 for marimba and 3 for vibraphone. The marimba mallets feature large birch shafts (11/32″ diameter) for increased articulation and sound projection. 100% synthetic yarn with double-stitching provides maximum durability and weather resistance. Looking for some Savannah area businesses, media outlets and bloggers to help promote a community event!

Invisible Children, non-profit film organization, has included a stop in Savannah on it’s “Legacy Tour”. This tour features a new film about the 30,000+ child soldiers in east Africa who have been abducted and forced into battle by Joseph Kony and his rebel army. This tour also features real Ugandans who have been affected by the war who will speak in person about their experiences and answer any questions. The event is on March 21 and it will be at The Lake Church on the southside of Savannah (50 Al Henderson Blvd).

Here are a couple videos about the tour:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ_4vC-_3gc

http://vimeo.com/8271057

Basically we just need/want help promoting it. This event is free and any money donated and all monies from merchandise purchases at the event go straight to Invisible Children. We have no budget for ads or promotion so we are looking for some compassionate people to donate air-time, to write and air/print a news story or blog about the event, to donate space in a window for a flyer, or to donate a banner-ad space on a blog or website for the event. We have videos, clips from the documentary, graphics, and all of that ready to go. We can even get you phone interviews with the Invisible Children staff or the Ugandans visiting before they arrive in Savannah. You can interview them in person on that Sunday when they are in town (they will be available in the afternoon).

What’s in it for you? Honestly… not much. Like I said we can’t pay for any of this promotion because we don’t have any money for it. Basically in return for whatever you do we could help promote your business/blog/media-outlet via our facebook pages, we can put a link or small ad on a program we’ll pass out at the event, and you could possibly even set up a table that night at the event with information on your business or organization. Plus your act of promotion will show the community you care about local events and international issues.

For more information check out the official facebook event page here:
