When churches and ministries miss the point…

Yesterday City Church was honored to host a film screening by a group called LiNK. They are helping to free refugees from North Korea. It’s a great organization, a great cause, and we were honored to host them and hang out with them all day. After the screening we all went to Jim’s house to chill and one of the LiNK guys shared horror stories about trying to book screenings and he said he got really frustrated with churches because many would say “well we only host things that deal with Jesus or the Bible in our building”. That really upset me because as I was trying to get the word out about the screening at our church the local Christian radio station here in Savannah said basically the same thing. They said they only support “Christian” causes.

Just know as I was typing this 3 verses came to mind…

He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. – Micah 6:8

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. – Luke 4:18-19

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. -James 1:27

I’m sure that if I took the time to look up more I could find dozens of places in the Bible where God talks about helping the broken and rescuing the enslaved.

I’m so thankful that I get to work and go to a church that “gets it”. I’m excited to be a part of a team that truly tries to preach and teach the whole scriptures.

We are excited to continue our film series on October 27 with Invisible Children. We will continue to pray for safe travels for LiNK and all other groups touring to promote worthwhile causes!

Even Jesus said, Mark 9:41For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
    Where is your series located?

While it is good and honorable to help people in Jesus’ name, we must also remember that simply helping people is not the Gospel. This is where the emergent churches are missing the point. People like Jim Wallis and others on the left are so focused on social justice and creating a utopia on earth that they don’t actually preach the Gospel. All the physical help here on earth means nothing if their soul is lost and they don’t have the hope that we have in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. It’s fine to help out a fellow man in need, but they need to hear the Gospel as well because without the Gospel, that’s like throwing a drowning person some food because he looks hungry and you want to show him love, however all he needs is someone to jump in and pull him out of the water.
